Kirkbymoorside Town Team Minutes

Tuesday 18th May 2010

7.30pm

Dug Out

Present: Judith Overfield, Rhys Thomas, Joe Coughlan, Toni Calam, Helen Gundry, Louise Mudd, Rory Towler, Helen Gardiner

Apologies: June Emerson, Jane Thomas, Chris Dowie, Tink Reader, Val Arnold, Gaynor de Barre

Projects Update:

Sportsfield: Joe and Gaile attended the AGM and reported that the new signage for the field has gone up. The Association is looking for funding and so the Team agreed to send a cheque for 150 pounds as half the cost.

Canteen: The Architect is coming on 21st May to find out what they want to do. Company called Mass Architecture which is a couple who teach community builds. Joe filled the Team in on the background and explained that everything was being co-coordinated through North Yorkshire Planning. There is a real question as to why the building needs to be demolished when it is sound physically. The architects may have some innovative suggestions.

A suggested meeting between the school and the canteen was recommended for as soon as possible. Judith and Louise will talk with Gill Head at school.

Manor Vale: Gaile updated the meeting, in that Paul Bridges of the DTA is still pursuing North Yorkshire for the Asset Transfer of Manor Vale. It is hoped that Paul will be attending a TT meeting very soon.

Rhys, Gary and Gaile to discuss Manor Vale possibilities before Paul attend.

KMS Museum: Mike Benson at Ryedale Folk Museum is interested in finding a possible alternative location for the Harrison Collection. Louise informed the Team about the History Group and its archive work. Tony Clark from the group would be an excellent contact and Louise will let Joe have his details. Meanwhile pressure is being brought to bear on Ryedale DC, Yvette Turnball of Heritage, to make the case for local history in Kirkby.

Louise, Rory and Rhys talked about footfall into town and how bringing in more visitors will benefit trade.

Employment: Micro Metalsmiths are still planning to move. This will leave a gap in employment opportunities and now that Russells Yard has been designated for Housing, even more need is felt to increase the industrial/employment land within and around town.

Waind's Field – was mentioned and the question was asked as to what is happening with the developer there. Persimmon bought the ransom strip which would form the exit road over the back. Gaile had made some enquiries and been told that ROK now own the land, however they deny all knowledge, at present.

Town Disruption: There was some considerable discussion around late night drinking, rowdy behaviour and general disruption on a Friday and Saturday nights. Rory pointed out that this had been going on for as long as he can remember and that only police presence would prevent it. This is not going to happen in the near future. Several residents had felt unable to call the police on the previous Friday, when it had been very noisy, as they were afraid that the police arriving at their door would point the finger at them.

Strategy Group: This Committee of Council is looking at how it can best move forward and we wait with interest to see what they will do next.

Advertising Screens: At the March meeting, it was agreed to look into the possibility of running pages from the web site, with advertising banners and flashes, on screens in a couple of places around town. These were suggested as: Doctors Surgery, TVC window, Library and Summit Bookshop. Any other suggestions?

Town Map: There was general discussion around a map of the town and how one could best be placed to act as a tourist guide, and any other relevant information. It was agreed that Judith and Helen would ask the Memorial Hall committee whether it would be possible to site a map in the memorial hall and anyone with maps is asked to bring them to the next meeting.

Finances: Joe passed the bill for hire of the Dug Out to Helen for payment, after approval and requested that the cheque for 150 be made out to the Sportsfield Association.

There being no other business, the meeting closed at 9pm.
